On the Menu Translation of Hangzhou Dish in the Perspective of Functionalism
摘要: Hangzhou, a city with long history and profound culture, is a popular place that attracts foreign travelers. Besides the famous places of interests in Hangzhou that overseas travelers hope to visit, the special Hangzhou cuisine is also an attraction that foreign visitors are eager to know and taste. However, there are very few restaurants in Hangzhou which have English menus, which would cause inconvenience for foreigners to order a certain dish and savor it. Thus, it is a practical need that an appropriate English version of Hangzhou cuisine names should be provides for many of the restaurants in Hangzhou to make their English menus.
Due to the special features of Hangzhou cuisine names, it is not an easy task to translate them into both accurate and elegant English. On many books which introduce Hangzhou cuisine to foreigners, there appear awkward translations of Hangzhou dish names, which may not only confuse foreign customers but also discourage them to order the dish due to cultural shock. For instance, the famous Hangzhou dish “西施舌” is translated into “Beautyrsquo;s tongue”, and “猫耳朵” is translated into “Catsrsquo; Ears”. Besides, there are different English versions of one dish name, which means that the Hangzhou dish menu translation is not standardized yet.
Adopting functionalist theory as guidance and collecting data from representative and authorized sources such as Hangzhou Cuisine Museum, the author tries to find out the specific functions of menus and find out what kind of elements should be taken into consideration when translating Hangzhou cuisine names. On the basis of these analysis above, the author not only attempts to discuss which English version of Hangzhou cuisine name is the most proper among various English translations, but also hopes to put the theory into the practice of appreciating excellent English translations of Hangzhou cuisine names. At the end of the paper, a systematic methods and principles are proposed for the menu translation of Hangzhou cuisine.
