Different Times, Different Escapes—A Comparative Study of Wang Zhi Lan Ke and Rip Van Winkle

Introduction

A great majority of literature works in the world, concentrated reflections of cultures and values and embodiment of wisdom from various areas and background, construct worldwide cultural diversity and forming respective cultural identity. Literature works mirror cultures in a way. As Ruan (1999) has pointed out in his paper the Relationship Between Literature Works and Cultures, cultures are a complex made of a lot of aspects with accumulation of time. Also, cultures are humansrsquo; activity of objectification in essence, which means that humans as regard of their own needs and purposes produces creative works to demonstrate self-essence and humanity. Literature works are not equal to cultures, but they play a vital part in cultures and they are one of the most vivid, specific, sufficient, dynamic manifestations in human cultures. Yao (1991) says in his book, literature has its ages of crude and consciously cultivated expression. Therefore, it can be found that through the research on literature works, people are able to be in quest of some natures of a certain culture in a certain time. Diverse literature works are diverse reflections of humansrsquo; cultures and values. By comparing the literature works from different cultural backgrounds, many aspects including social situations, value orientation and so on can be discovered, which on the contrary, also furthers comprehension of the literature works and rises understanding to humansrsquo; spirits.

As one category of literature works, time-travel stories undisputedly deliver forefathersrsquo; wits, thoughts and perspectives toward the their living environment. Time-travel stories, which seem to be totally absurd and different from real world and real life, are both created in Chinese and English literature and share many similarities in story contents.

The thesis of this paper is to compare two time-travel stories in Chinese and English. The two representative stories, Wang Zhi Lan Ke and Rip Van Winkle , which are also the earliest time-travel stories in China and western countries, are selected to compare and study. Also, the paper is going to explore the different escapes as well as cultures hidden behind the two similar stories, and find out what the two literature works convey to descendants. In order to compare the two stories better, some literatures are collected, commented and concluded.

The literatures and materials will be divided into five categories.
