The Use of Language Games in the Teaching of English Prepositions

Grammar is fundamental for English listening, speaking, reading and writing. Grammar also is one of the three basic components (pronunciation, vocabulary and grammar) of language, and is significant for people to learn language and to communicate. English prepositions are small in number but complex in usage and frequent in using rate. It is one of the most difficult part of speeches when Chinese students learn English. Structuralists, functionalists and cognitive linguists at home and aboard have done researches on English prepositions from different points of view. This thesis tries to investigate English prepositions from a new perspective. The author uses the game teaching method to teach spatial preposition in Junior One.
This thesis tries to investigate teaching English prepositions using game teaching method, to see whether the game teaching method is appropriate to teaching prepositions. The author chose Junior One students as participants from a junior high school in Hangzhou. Since Grade seven students are in their essential stage in learning English. Their interests in English are very important. Three research questions are addressed: 1) Can the game teaching method improve the learning of English prepositions? 2) Is it more efficient to teach the English prepositions by the game teaching method than traditional teaching methodology? 3) Was the interest of studentsrsquo; English grammar learning increased using the game teaching method?

一、文献综述
- Introduction:
In the field of foreign language teaching, grammar teaching has been an essential topic for a long time. As Rutherford (1987) referred, grammar teaching almost equals to foreign language teaching for more than two thousand and five hundred years. Thus, the significance of grammar teaching cannot be doubted. Grammar is deemed to be an inseparable part of English teaching and learning. It is fundamental for English listening, speaking, reading and writing. Grammar also is one of the three basic components (pronunciation, vocabulary and grammar) of language, and is significant for people to learn language and to communicate.
For so many years, grammar teaching had an important position in foreign language teaching. However, in the later stage of 20 century, many learning theories and language theories emerged one after another, which affected the status of grammar and vocabulary in foreign language teaching greatly. Subsequently, the calls for change of foreign language teaching were coming thick. Especially in 2011, the Ministry of Education published the New English Curriculum Standard. Studentsrsquo; comprehensive language competence was emphasized; while the mastery of grammar knowledge was weaken in some degree.
