A Contrastive Study of Changganxingrsquo;s Two Translated Versions from the Perspective of Cultural Differences
一、文献综述
Li Bairsquo;s poems are renowned both at home and abroad with great popularity. Domestic and foreign scholars show strong interest in his poetry, and many translations and studies about Li Bairsquo;s poems have been done.
Translators around the world are attracted to have passions for the practical studies of Chinese-English translation about Li Bairsquo;s masterpieces. In western countries, translations about his poetry may begin from eighteenth century in England. During the period of more than three centuries, translators came out one after another, such as Ezra Pound, Arthur Waley and Stephen Owen, who played an important role in spreading poetry of Li Bai in English-speaking countries. The translations in the early time mainly focused on some short and easily understandable poems. However, with the increase of translations about Chinese literature, as well as the spread of Chinese culture in western countries, the scope of poem selection became widened. Foreign translators would like to choose poems involved in diverse themes, different length and forms. Later, they started to pay attention to the studies of Li Bairsquo;s life and cultural background of poetry. It was a great progress for westerners to have more clear and comprehensive understandings about Li Bai and his poetry.
On the other hand, Chinese translators have always been enthusiastic in translations about Li Bairsquo;s poems. Translators like Xu Yuanchong, Wengxianliang and Xu Zhongjie, translated poems in a poetic way or into a free verse to show the charm of Chinese culture to westerners with the help of different translation skills. There are some other translators, who made good use of their advantages in languages and cultures, presenting poetry of Li Bai to the English world on the basis of cooperation. The representatives are Yang Xianyi and his wife Dai Naidi, Witter Bynner and Jiang Kanghu and so on. English translations about poems of Li Bai are continuously being studied nowadays. And the translation achievements of translators in a new generation will obviously help English readers to know Li Bai and his poetry.
And in this thesis, a contrastive study of Changganxingrsquo;s two translated versions from the perspective of cultural differences is discussed.
Ezra Poundrsquo;s great achievements in translations about ancient Chinese poems help Chinese culture spread in western countries. But his translation still causes some argumentation by virtue of different opinions from other scholars. They just utilize their fixed standards to measure Poundrsquo;s translation rather than consider the influence from cultural differences. Maybe some of judgments or comments are not that neutral to his adaptation.
Though Mr. Xu is an expert in Chinese poem translation, and his version is much more closer to the original one and also expresses the connotation of this poem, does anything there still need to be improved or further explored? The mature works are worth taking into reconsideration and reevaluation.
