Blanche: A Doppelganger of Homosexuality in A Streetcar Named Desire

Abstract

Tennessee Williams is a master playwright of the twentieth century in America. Since his masterpiece A Streetcar Named Desire was premiered, it has gotten unanimously attraction from scholars to audience, as well as the controversial analysis of its theme from cultural clashes and feminist perspective. Different from the traditional view, this paper will provide an understanding based on a sensitive topic by illustrating Blanchersquo;s identity as a doppelganger of homosexuality, which will attempt to enrich the social significance of the right attitude towards vulnerable groups from Blanchersquo;s tragedy in an era of uproar against homosexuality.

摘 要

田纳西·威廉斯是美国二十世纪最重要的戏剧家之一。其戏剧《欲望号街车》自首次公演后,就受到学术界、读者及观众的喜爱。该著作的的主题思想也自其问世以来就备受争议,多是从文化冲突以及女性主义的视角解读。本文试图从同性恋这一敏感话题展开,通过揭示剧中女主人公布兰奇·杜布瓦的同性恋二重身身份,从而对《欲望号街车》的主题思想进行不同于传统的剖析。从美国传统文化对同性恋的禁忌与打压下的布兰奇的悲剧中反思当今社会下我们对弱势群体所应持有的正确态度。
