Literature Review
In the process of learning English, reading plays an important role. The ability of English reading can directly reflect the ability of listening, speaking, reading and writing (Yang, 2007). Recently a lot of second language researchers try to find out the factors that influencing learnersrsquo; reading ability. There are several key factors that have been studied, including the intelligence, personalities, learning strategies, learning attitude and learning motivation (Liu, 2004).
According to considerable research, motivation and leaning strategy have a deep effect on reading. The research has been done on English learnersrsquo; reading strategy and reading motivation, including the relationship between reading strategy and reading achievement, the relevance between reading motivation and reading achievement, the factors influencing the reading strategy and reading motivation, and the training or development of reading strategy and reading motivation. However, little previous research focuses on the relationship between reading motivation and reading strategy.
1 Reading Strategy
1.1 The definition of reading strategy
Reading strategy has various definitions. Here is a brief introduction to the different ways that some authoritative linguists define reading strategy. Langer (1982) regards reading strategy as a kind of static and passive resources or skills which can be used by readers. Reading strategy is implications about how readers conceive a task, what textual cues they attend to, how they make sense of what they do when they do not understand (Block, 1986). And Wallace (1992) explains that reading strategy as ways of reading which are used by readers for flexible reading and the purpose of reading. According to Duffy (1993), reading strategy is plans for solving problems encountered in constructing meaning. Also, A reading strategy is defined as lsquo;a systematic plan consciously adopted and monitored to improve onersquo;s performancersquo; in learning (Harris and Hodges 1995).
Though there is not an agreed opinion about the definition of reading strategy, some common characteristics of reading strategy can be concluded. Firstly, reading strategy is mental activities that are highly conscious, deliberate, goal-oriented, and planful (Olshavsky, 1976). This means that readers are conscious of what they do and how they make sense of what they read. Secondly, reading strategies are complex and flexible because there is no one strategy can be applied to all situations. Readers employ a range of strategies to read efficiently, which includes adjusting the reading speed, skimming ahead, considering titles, headings, pictures and text structure information, anticipating information to come, and so on (Grabe, 1991). Finally, reading strategies are self-regulatory. Casanave (1988) suggests that comprehension monitoring consists of any behaviors which allow readers to evaluate their ongoing comprehension process and which helps them take compensatory action when necessary.
1.2 Classification of Reading Strategies
As for the classification of reading strategy, there is also not an agreement. The following are some representative implications for the classification of reading strategy.
