L.M. Montgomeryrsquo;s novel Anne of Green Gables has enjoyed a very high status in literary field and quite a lot studies based on this novel have been done over the years from various perspectives, for instance, personality, translation, religion, and so on. While talking about feminism, Shi Juhong indicates that one of the most obvious topics in this novel was to emphasize womanrsquo;s speech. Shi conveys the idea that in Montgomeryrsquo;s era, the first move of feminism has grown quickly, so her works more or less reveal feminist consciousness. Shirsquo;s journal expresses the idea that speech is like the leverage of women, and only if women are able to express their thought free and openly can they obtain the real freedom. She also finds that many of Montgomeryrsquo;s women characters are willing to strive for their voices. For example, Mrs. Lynde in Anne of Green Gables is always proud of herself for she can speak out what she really thinks (史菊鸿 161-162).
Jane Mattisson introduces the novel as a story which follows the development of Anne Shirley from child to adolescent from eleven to sixteen years of age (Mattisson 19-28). Besides, she mentions in her study that “Anne of Green Gables hellip; deals with the deepest anxieties about growing up” (Waterson 198-220). As Mary Rubio argues, growing up for Anne also includes confronting the power relations in the Avonlea community as well as its gender relations. Besides, Mary points out that “Montgomeryrsquo;s stories often support hellip; stereotypes about men and women”. (Rubio 9) In Montgomeryrsquo;s time, there was still a gap between men and women, suggesting women often busied themselves with sewing, making dessert, while men were always doing the farm work. Thus the novel really shows the stereotypes of society and reflects the status of men and women.
Yin Jingyuan has her understanding of Anne of Green Gables from the aspect of ecofeminism. In her essay, she comes up with an opinion that Anne escapes from the shackles of patriarchal society by means of her imagination. Before Anne comes to the Green Gables, she was an orphan who did not have support from family, friends, as well as beautiful clothes or toys. She had to babysit other peoplersquo;s kids for a living, so the reality for her was tough and grueling. A French feminist Simone de Beauvoir has a saying that if a child often suffers from hard physical labor, he or she might well become a premature slave and be doomed to have an unhappy life, and Simone de Beauvoir also declares that the ancient patriarchy has still owned the power; only the resistance is broken could men and women be truly equal (波伏娃 21). Nevertheless, the burden of life does not crush Annersquo;s spirit; on the contrary, Anne always thinks of the trouble her meets in an optimistic attitude and imagines good things. It can be seen in the novel that to achieve her goal of entering the Queenrsquo;s, Anne works hard at school and finally makes it. At that time, she eventually returns to the real world from her fantasy world(尹静媛 95-98). In Yin Jingyuanrsquo;s mind, Anne is a representative of the new women.
